FLOW Workshop Day 4: Parkour Gym Session 3

Practical Exam!! (aka Parkour Tag)
Location: Club Gymnastica
Injuries: my toe hurts :(
Faceplant: none! :D
Parkour Tag Run Time: I dunno, but I definitely wasnt the fastest; on the other hand, no 'tags'
Resulting Muscle Pain: again, not too bad, but I've been wrong before 0_o

The Verdict: Unless you're a seasoned traceur, you cannot automatically do all those moves you just learned during a speed run, especially when being chased XD

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I knew that 'surprise' they had planned for us wasn't the 'hey we got you free ice cream!' kind of surprise; but it wasn't bad either.

Last gym session marks our last session in parkour (the following sessions will focus then on free-running), so it was composed of a review of everything we've learned so far and *surprise number 1* a practical exam! And I thought I left those behind in college XD XD

We did the usual warm-ups and conditioning exercises first, then were given 30 minutes to practice on our own. We were encouraged to run through all those vaults, rolls, jumps, underbars and what-not, and to ask help from our trainers.

Now for the 'exam'. Granted, it wasn't an actual exam where you pass or fail, nor is it a competition, since parkour is not really defined as a 'sport'. This was mostly done to asses what we've learned and test each individual skill on a 'practical application'.

The exam was simple enough: an obstacle course composed of vaulting horses of varying height and width, bars and cushions, was set up around the gym. We were to run through the entire course, utilizing whatever parkour skill we learned until we reach the end. The fastest one (separate categories for boys and girls) gets a prize, as is the one who was the 'most creative' (define creative?).

Now here's the zinger: we wont be doing that run on our own, oh no. We'll be having a traceur running after - no CHASING - us through that course. Talk about motivation. If our 'chaser' manages to reach us and 'tag' us, a second is added to our overall time. Of course, even without that penalty I'm pretty sure we'd still be running like hell away from our own trainers :p

It was actually funny when you weren't the one doing the run; we all laughed and cheered our fellow workshop students on as they did their best to get through all those obstacles with a traceur hot on their heels, screeching like little girls, arms and legs flailing clumsily. The funniest thing was, even with all that training we did beforehand, very few of us were actually able to do those proper vaults; some of us even scrambled UNDER the higher vaulting horses just to get ahead (was that cheating?). I guess that was due to the fact that our main driving force was panic. And when we panicked, we did whatever it took to get away.

Still it wasn't bad for our first run. Lots of practice was still needed to build up the proper instinct to do a real vault when approaching a 3foot high wall on a full run, and not bash it with your foot in panic (which was what I did).

Next week we start with our Free Running sessions ( I wonder how that one will go...)

Oh, and by the way - new uniforms are here!!!!

A shirt and jogging pants (plus an extra pair since we registered early)
Black 'Team Shift' t-shirt

Uniform 'PPFA' loose, gray Jogging Pants

Early Registry 'Free Runners' black Jogging Pants with elastics at the ankles (prevents it from sliding up your leg when do those flips, I guess)
