UPCFA Art Fair 2010 "Open Studio"

Last November 27 marked the annual Art Fair "Open Studio" 2010 for the UP College of Fine Arts at Bartlett Hall.

Event Banner. Oh very smart, forgot to take a photo of the actual banner, so I have to make do with this tiny photo >.<
The event showcases the various works of students, professors and professionals alike through the exhibits,
demonstrations and talks throughout the day. For us alumni, it was also a chance to reconnect with old friends and show our support for our Alma Mater

Ahhh, the faculty room. So maaany memories (good or bad, you decide XD)

The event began with an opening ceremony - which I missed because it was 9am on a Saturday XD. After that everyone was pretty much free to have a look around at the exhibits and attend the demos and talks scheduled for the day, as well as participate in some workshops.

Exhibit at Tolentino Hall
We spent the morning going around the exhibits; there were the usual student projects from the Painting, Industrial Design and Visual Communication courses.

I personally enjoyed looking at the artworks, even if I have spent years doing nothing but look at art. You can never get tired of the stuff, especially the super-creative ones.

Left: combining art and equations! Right: is it me, or...

Left: I like the soft, painted look on this one; Right: a baby made out of..uh..stuff..

They also brought me back to those college years, where I spent my days bent over a bristol board making dots with my pen, molding rubber foam into cute shapes and breathing in insane amounts of turpentine while oil painting.

This is PAPER AAAART!! Hehe. This stuff can be tricky, as you try to craft recognizable figures using cut pieces of paper

The 'Glow Room' - my favorite exhibit. It's reminiscent of those night-time fairy worlds

The glowing things are actually 'lamps' shaped like food items, like this "Juice" and "Popcorn" lamps

Making toys out of rubber foam! ^_^

One of the main events of the fair was the Open Studio itself, which was basically a drawing session you were free to watch or even join in. Just pick a spot, bring out your tools and do your best. If you're lucky you may find yourself working alongside one of the National Artists who came that day (lucky = intimidated) as you draw the model, dressed in fine Filipinana wear (usually a Pitoy Moreno creation - was it the same for this year?).

Open Exhibit on-going
One of my favorites was the demo on calligraphy, which showcased the fine art of...uh...calligraphy (drat).

Left: the master at work; Right: some sample calligraphy scrolls
And what fair would be complete without booths selling a selection of artsy stuff; we enjoyed browsing through the shirst, hats and jewelry on sale. I wish I brought more money with me that day - I would have loved a new CFA Shirt or one of those cool rings.

Just two booths though 0_o

Funky fish ring on sale

A Chocolate Kiss Cafe booth was also set-up, as always, complete with customary tent, tables and chairs and its menu of Beef Stroganoff, Devil's Food Cake and Dayap Chiffon Cake. Yum

Choco Kiss Booth in the picturesque central garden...I should have taken photos up close @_@

The only thing I regret about the whole thing was that there weren't that many people in attendance, even from our own batch (which usually boasted a full turn-out, hmph). The Art Fair wasn't as explosive as it used to be, and it's a shame because it was something that we could have really enjoyed and perhaps even bring our friends and family to so they could appreciate what we do.

Maybe a bit more involvement is needed, a little innovation.

Still, this year was pretty good. Next year perhaps, will hopefully be even better.
