We had our parkour session on Sunday morning since we were to do it outdoors at the QC Circle. This was the first time we were to apply everything we learned in the workshop on urban grounds.
Even though we've done some of it before during our Introductory Session, it was still a little scary being back outdoors where you know a wrong fall could result in something far worse than a rug burn. Suddenly all my small, niggling worries in the gym came back two-fold.
We started with the usual cardio and stretches, then went on to the conditioning exercises, some of them with an added urban twist.
Instead of doing our QMs on the ground, we did them moving backwards up the stairs (meaning we were essentially crawling up the stairs while facing the ground) then down again. We also did a few shimmies along a high wall for some added arm muscle toning. We also did an exercise where we put our feet up the low wall of an empty fountain and crawled around the ground on our hands. Ouch
Next we started applying the moves we learned in parkour and free running on our environment. It was almost the same our first jam, but this time we were looking at things with a fresh new perspective. Suddenly we knew how to get up on that wall and go over that railing. And that big rock from before didn't look so big now.
We experimented with precision jumps over low railings, vaults over higher ones (I shied away from the vaults thanks a lingering fear from my practice accidents - better work on that one soon), vaulting over rocks and cat-climbing on small walls.
Last session was very chillax (well, chillax compared to our previous sessions) and gave us a chance to really get into the zone of an urban run. It was also a bit of a wake up call from that safe feeling we had while at the gym. There's nothing here to catch us and break our fall, so we learned to be extra careful when doing the moves.
Next week marks our very last *sniff* session for this workshop.
